After the response I got from my hair post on Instagram & Facebook a few days ago, I decided to write up a whole blog post so that I can answer all the questions in one place.
I have written a few posts recently on why I have changed my life to be more non-toxic and my hair care routine was not only part of that change but for me, the HARDEST part. Why was it so hard? Well, I have a reputation for having really, not great hair. All my life it has been so dry, frizzy and pretty dull. I have always had a really dry flakey scalp, have been diagnosed with psoriasis and other weird skin things, have been given medicated shampoo, other chemist shampoo’s, ‘natural shampoo’s’.. literally I have tried everything and most of the time, nothing really worked (if it did, it wasn’t for long).
So in saying all of that, there is no way I would write a post about hair if swapping to non-toxic hadn’t worked. I have never written a post on my hair because even if I found something that did work, it would be for a maximum of 6 weeks at a time and then I would need to swap it again.
I have been doing this routine for just over 3 months now and I have not had to change anything. My hair is smooth, not as frizzy, feels healthy and my scalp is about 98% non-flakey. For me that is pretty life changing.
Shampoo & Conditioner
I use the Innersense Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner which I get from the Organic Beauty Co here in Australia. I chose this Shampoo and Conditioner as it was a very popular choice in the non toxic community. As you can imagine from what I have said above, I was sceptical! I genuinely thought they probably wouldn’t work! However I LOVE them. They are so hydrating and leave my hair so soft. A lot of other ‘natural’ shampoo’s i have tried, leave my hair with a oily film however this one doesn’t!
If you have coloured hair, they also have a line called Colour Awakening which is very well reviewed. I had a few samples of these and although the product is different it worked just as well.
The hair oil I use (and Dietmar as well, he loves it!) is the Mirah Hair Oil from Young Living. This was a product I didn’t buy, I received it for free through my Essential Rewards order and what a great free product it turned out to be. I didn’t even think I would use it however I started using it on my ends and its so good! Leaves my hair so soft and makes my ends dry a lot less frizzy!
DIY Leave in conditioner
What you will need:
1 Tablespoon Innersense Conditioner
1 Tablespoon Mirah Hair Oil
5 Drops Rosemary Essential Oil
5 Drops Lavender Essential Oil
1. Combine all ingredients in a spray bottle. Shake gently to combine.
2. Spray onto wet or dry hair that needs extra moisture.
Some people also add aloe vera to this however I didn’t have any on hand.
There are a few Essential Oils which are so amazing for hair growth and support, however the ones I use are specifically for dry, damaged hair and a dry flakey scalp.
General Essential Oils for Hair Support
I add these three oils into Dietmar’s shampoo and conditioner to give them a bit of a boost!
Essential Oils I use for my scalp
- Tea Tree
I add 3 drops of each oil into my shampoo when I wash my hair. I add them to the second shampoo only.
My Hair Care Routine
Friday is Hair Wash Day! I wash my hair every Friday (sometimes I go longer depending on how my hair and scalp are feeling).
Shampoo – In the shower I wash my hair with shampoo twice, once to get all the dirt and oil out and a second wash to thoroughly wash my hair. I also add my essential oils into this wash (I keep my oils to the side and add the drops directly into the shampoo in my hand, mix them around with my finger and then wash). This time when I have the shampoo in, I tend to leave it a bit longer so that the oils have time to work.
Conditioner – I use about a 20cent coin sized amount of conditioner, starting from my ends and working the conditioner to just over halfway up my hair. I never use conditioner on my scalp. I leave it in for around 3 minutes before rinsing.
Drying – Once out of the shower I will generally wrap my hair in a towel just for the time it takes me to get dressed and will then either leave it down to air dry or I will blow dry.
Hair Oil & Leave in Conditioner – whilst it is still damp I will add the hair oil and leave in conditioner to my ends and about 10cms up my hair, never letting it touch my scalp. Sometimes I will use the remaining oil on my hands on the hair around the front of my head however not close to my face.
Straightening/ Curling – I use a GHD hair Straightener to strtaighten or curl my ful head once per week. As a have a lot of long hair, this takes a while however if I take the time to do it properly, it will last quite a few days. Once I feel like it has started to fall out I might re do my hair one other time during the week.
Brushing – I make sure to brush my hair everyday. Like thoroughly brush my hair from my scalp downwards. This not only stimulates the scalp but also removes any build up from your scalp down into your hair rather than making your scalp oily.
Dry Shampoo – If I had dry shampoo (I am yet to find a non toxic one I like) I would only use it once per week near the end of my hair wash cycle or if I had somewhere to go out and restyle etc. I know some people use it on days 4-6 if they need it.
I trained my hair around 2 years ago to be able to wash it only once per week. When I was going through really bad times with my scalp it would sometimes be more often however since changing to this routine its only ever once per week.
Scalp produces oil which is good. However, generally we over wash our hair because modern shampoos and conditioners dry out our scalps causing over production of oil. Hair training is easy!! You just need will power and commitment.
Add one extra day each time you wash your hair. If you currently wash it everyday, wash it every other day until your hair adjusts and then add another day. It can take a few weeks for your hair to adjust so you do need to be patient!
Blond bleached hair is pretty porous so can generally go longer. It really depends on your hair texture.
Tips for preserving your hair for a week or even up to 10 days between washing
- Always shampoo twice! It will always foam up more on second shampoo.
- Shower cap in the shower and bath
- Wear hair up at night in a high plaited pony or bun not too tight in a scrunchy or invisibobble
- In the AM brush hair out from scalp down. Moves all the gunk off your scalp into your hair leaving your scalp cleaner but not drying it so that your doesn’t start to produce excess oil. Stimulation on your scalp helps with hair health
- Day 5 or 6 Dry shampoo, brush it out and restyle if need be
